Mrs. Mae Bertha Mitchell was the eleventh of fourteen children born to the parentage of the late Eugene and Elizabeth Roberson Lewis, Sr. in the Jonesville and Scottsville area of Harrison County, Texas. At an early age, she accepted Christ and united with the Old Border Baptist Church. She also attended the schools of Jonesville but would have to drop out to help in the fields. She often spoke of how she could pick more cotton than any of her sisters and brothers. The St. Mark parking lot was her garden for many years. When she could not garden, sewing, cooking and quilting was her way of relaxing. On May 4, 1947, Mae Bertha married the love of her life, Rufus Mitchell, Jr., from Elysian Fields, Texas. To this union five children were born. During this time, she decided to go to night school to take some courses and get her GED. When they made the move to the city of Marshall, she united with the St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Clinton Jernigan. She served in many positions including: church clerk, Sunday School teacher, member of the choir, president of Mission, Ushers, deaconess, Order of Eastern Star, and a life time member of the D.A.V. Mrs. Mae Bertha Mitchell was prededed in death by her husband, Rufus Mitchell, Jr., son, Henry Carl Mitchell, daughter Dorothy Ann Curtis, and grandson Richard Bailey. Mrs. Mae Bertha Mitchell departed this life at Marshall Manor West, Thursday, July 11, 2019 in Marshall, Texas. Those left to cherish her memory and the end of the generation are: one daughter, Ruth Doris (Hurdis) Gatson of Marshall, Texas; two sons, Rufus Charles (Alice) Mitchell, III of Baytown, Texas and Calvin (Lorine) Mitchell of Commerce, Texas ten grandchildren, Michael Gatson, Rufus Bluitt (Melissa) Mitchell, Kendall Bernard Gatson, Rachel Shelae (Mark) Spears, Dawalus Isaac Gatson, Lauren Emily Mitchell, Alicia Davette (Bobby) Thomas, Ebony Nicole Stewart, Lucretia (James) Allen and Phillip Bailey; seventeen great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Nora Lee Brown of Marshall, Texas; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Mitchell and Estra Leon (Dorothy) Mitchell both of Lubbock, Texas; a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends
