John L. Hayes, Jr. was born August 2,1971, in Marshall, Texas to the parents of John L. Hayes, Sr. and Essie Bell Hayes. Both parents preceded him in death.

John was baptized at Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Pastor James W. Reeves.

On November 18, 2021, John was called home to be with the Lord. To his family members, he was lovingly known as "Emp." He loved teasing his children and his nieces and nephews with the stories that he would tell. He was never short of a good laugh at their expense. He enjoyed spending tie dancing and playing dominos. He was self-proclaimed "best domino player in the world." His favorite song of all time to dance to was "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa and The Soul Sonic Force. Just as much as John loved to have a good time, he also loved the Lord. He knew the Bible from cover to cover, and could often be found in his room listening to sermons and to his favorite gospel groups.

John was preceded in death by his wife Freida Hayes, and one sister, Annie Mae Ford.

He leaves to cherish his memory three sons: John Ezra Hayes of Marshall, Texas, John L. Hayes III of Hawaii, Jaysce Hayes of Marshall, Texas; one daughter Jhizah Hayes of Longview, Texas; Two brothers, Curtis (Renee) Hayes and Danny (Selma) Hayes both of Waskom, Texas; five sisters Luretha (LK) Bennett and Alma Sparks of Waskom, Texas; Genese Hayes of Lodi, Texas; Janie Washington and Karan (James) Reeves of Marshall, Texas, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
