LIFE REFLECTION

Essie Bell Washington was born January 21, 1937 in Waskom, Texas to the parents of Booker T. Washington and Osceola Washington, whereas both parents preceded her in death.

Essie was baptized at Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church at an early age under the leadership of Rev. Ozzie Dunn. She remained a faithful member until her death.

On March 28, 2021, Essie was called home to be with the Lord. All who knew her will remember her smiling face, loving nature and caring spirit. She loved cooking and feeding her family. Peach cobbler was her specialty dessert. She loved life and she loved being surrounded by her family. Many times she could be found dancing with her children, grandchildren or nieces. She instilled in her children the importance of loving one another and being there for each other. Not only did her children call her Mother, the grand and great grands also called her Mother because that is who she was to all.

Essie was preceded in death by her husband, John L. Hayes; two children, David Hayes and Annie Mae Ford; four brothers, Lorenzo Washington, John Washington, Clarence Washington and Eddie Washington; and two sisters, Ruby Rowe and Ora Washington.

She leaves to cherish her memory: three sons, Curtis (Renee) Hayes, John Hayes, Jr. both of Waskom, Texas and Danny (Selma) Hayes of Marshall, Texas, and five daughters, Luretha (L. K.) Bennett, and Alma Sparks of Waskom, Texas, Genese Hayes of Lodi, Texas and Janie Washington and Karan (James) Reeves of Marshall, Texas; a special daughter in love, Chiquita Love of Lodi, Texas; one sister, Levada Allen of Waskom, Texas; (22) grandchildren; (27) great-grandchildren; (2) great-great grandchildren; a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
