Funeral services for Mrs. Artha Ree Brooks will be held Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Cross Road Baptist Church in DeBerry, TX. at 12:00 noon. Interment will follow in the Cross Road Cemetery. Viewing will be Friday, May 29, 2026, from 1 to 5:30 p.m. and visitation will be from 6 to 7:00 p.m. at Lewis Funeral Home. Mrs. Brooks was born June 15, 1932, in DeBerry, TX. and departed on May 21, 2026.

Artha Ree Morgan Brooks, 93, of DeBerry, Texas, peacefully entered eternal rest on May 21, 2026. Born on June 15, 1932, to Freeman Morgan, Sr. and Luvenia Beechum Morgan, she lived a life rooted in faith, family, service and love.

At the age of 15, she married the love of her life, James "Son" Brooks, Sr., and together they shared 62 years of marriage until his passing in 2010. Their union was blessed with ten children and generations of grandchildren and great grandchildren. In 2008, the couple received a presidential greeting from President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in honor of their 60th wedding anniversary.

Affectionately known as "Mother Brooks," she devoted her life to caring for others. A gifted cook, gardener, seamstress, and homemaker, she was known throughout the community for her generous spirit, beautiful gardens, homemade cakes, and handcrafted crocheted blankets. Alongside her husband, she helped raise several of his younger siblings after the passing of her in-laws, reflecting her lifelong commitment to family and compassion.

Artha Ree was a faithful servant of God who dedicated many years to Cross Road Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as Missionary President, Church Secretary, Choir President, Sunday School Teacher, and leader of numerous ministries and church projects.

she leaves to cherish her memory: four daughters, Ruby Carpenter of Houston, Gloria (Tony) Hawkins of Longview, Delores Blankumsee of DeBerry, and Ruth Brooks of Longview; four sons, James "Sonny" Brooks of Marshall, John (Ruth) Brooks of Carthage, Jeffrey (Gladys) Brooks of Hallsville, and Curtis Brooks of Midlothian; 27 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren; her beloved sister, Addie Ruth Laster of Cathedral City, California; one sister-in-law, Alice Fite of Lancaster, Texas; one brother-in-law, Isaac Brooks of DeSoto, Texas; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Son" Brooks, Sr., her parents, Freeman and Luvenia Morgan, two infant daughters, and five siblings.

Artha Ree will be remembered for her unwavering faith, quiet strength, generosity, and the love she poured into everyone blessed to know her.
